Pharmaceutical services have been invaluable to society for many centuries and have assumed greater importance in our times when “Wonder drugs” have become so common place that they are almost taken for granted. The holder of the B.Pharm degree after licensure by the State Board of Pharmacy will be sought after in many areas.
The community practice of pharmacy is the most important means by which pharmacist may practice community pharmacy in an independent pharmacy, in the capacity of a staff pharmacist, a manager, or in-time, or as an owner. The Pharmacist may serve as a staff pharmacist in the chain drug store or in a managerial position. Hospital Pharmacies have greatly expanded their services in recent years and most hospitals have a pharmacy department which employs a substantial number of staff pharmacists in addition to technical and clerical personnel. Pharmacists with the proper qualifications and experience can look forward to assuming the position of chief pharmacist or clinical pharmacist in a pharmacy department of a hospital.
The Pharmaceutical industry which manufactures a wide variety of potent and effective medicinal agents employs many pharmacists in various capacities. The latter range from sales, formulation, manufacturing and quality control to research and development activities.
The pharmacist will find many additional opportunities. Holders of the master of pharmacy degree can be found in top positions in hospital pharmacies, as well as in research in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. If a pharmacist continues studies and is awarded the doctor of philosophy degree, even better opportunities are available. These include important research position in the pharmaceutical industry, institution which carry on research programmes, and the academic sphere. Faculty members for colleges of pharmacy are in short supply and find many challenging and rewarding positions open to them involving both teaching and research.
Few professions offer the variety of specializations and opportunities, as well as the remuneration, that the profession of pharmacy does. Pharmacy can offer a challenging, satisfying and rewarding career to the individuals whose interest lie in health services to the public, business, scientific research, college teaching, hospital practice and many other areas.
