Sri Suttur Veerasimhasana Math was established at Suttur, Nanjangud Taluk, Mysore District by Adi Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeshwara Bhagawathpadaru during the second half of tenth century. Raja Chola of Kanchi and Rajamalla of Talkad, the two leading kings of the region who were arch enemies, became friends and staunch disciples of the above guru, after hearing His preaching. Both were instrumental in setting the Math at Suttur.
Jagadguru Sri Dr.Shivarathri Rajendra Maha Swamigalavaru, the 23rd pontiff of Sri Suttur Veerasimhasana Math was the architect and founder of J.S.S.Maha Vidyapeetha, which came into being in 1954. H.H.Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamigalu left the mortal world for eternal bliss on 6th December 1986. His successor Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji is the present and 24th pontiff of Sri Suttur Veerasimhasana Math and President of J.S.S.Mahavidyapeetha, since December 1986. With the divine inspiration of Sri Swamiji, J.S.S.College of Pharmacy was started in the year 1973 under the Management of J.S.S.Maha Vidyapeetha, Mysore. More than two hundred and fifty institutions which include Nursery schools, Primary schools, Colleges, for Men and Women, Polytechnic and Professional institutes like Medical, Engineering and Pharmacy Colleges are managed under the J.S.S. Maha Vidyapeetha and are spread over the length and breadth of Karnataka State, other neighbouring States and New Delhi.
J.S.S. College of Pharmacy was started to produce quality Pharmacists with a Diploma in Pharmacy who could serve in community and Hospital Pharmacy. After the Diploma College completed a decade, it was decided to upgrade the college to Degree level. B.Pharm course was started in 1983 to prepare graduates in Pharmacy to meet their ever increasing need in the Pharmaceutical industry, Drugs Control, Hospital, Teaching and Community Pharmacy. M.Pharm was started in 1991 in Industrial Pharmacy specialization. Ph.D Programme in Pharmaceutical Sciences has commenced from 1992. M.Pharm in Pharmacy Practice is being offered from 1995-96. M.Pharm in Bulk Drugs is being offered from 1999-2000. Institution is offering post graduates courses in clinical pharmacy (bridging programme) in collaboration with School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, University of South Australia since 2000.
The Diploma course (D.Pharm) is recognised by Pharmacy Council of India and Degree course (B.Pharm) and P.G.Courses (M.Pharm) are affiliated to the RGUHS, Bangalore. Diploma, degree and P.G.Courses are approved by AICTE, New Delhi. Ph.D programme is affiliated to RGUHS, Bangalore.
